Meet Prof. Charles Ochie

Prof. Charles Ochie, Sr., Ph.D.

Dr. Charles Onochie Ochie, Sr., PhD. (Ogbuevi) was born and raised in Aguleri, Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. He attended Father Joseph Memorial High School. After completing his high school education, he began his professional career with the Nigerian Ports Authority, where he worked as a Senior Quay Staff at Tin Can Island Port in Lagos for several years before relocating to the United States to pursue higher education.

Dr. Ochie is a professor of Criminal Justice and Dean of the Graduate School at Albany State University (ASU) in Albany, Georgia. he also serves as Activities Director for a multi-million-dollar U.S. Department of Education HBCU grant supporting the development and expansion of graduate STEM programs.

Prior to his appointment as Dean, Dr. Ochie served for 18 years as Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice and Forensic Science, where he played a key role in building and directing ASU's Forensic Science program. His leadership contributed to the development of the program's graduate curriculum concentration and the creation of one of the first fully online Master of Science in Criminal Justice programs within the University System of Georgia.

Dr. Ochie earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Albany State University (1987), a Master of Science in Sociology from Valdosta State University (1989), and a Ph.D. in Sociology with specialization in Criminology from Oklahoma State University (1993). He taught at several institutions before returning to Albany State University in 1997, where he has since played a significant role in academic leadership and program development.

As Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Ochie has worked to expand graduate enrollment and support the development of new graduate STEM programs, helping strengthen the university's research workforce development mission.

Beyond academia, Dr. Ochie is a community leader and nonprofit founder. He established and leads several organizations, including the Prof. Charles Ochie Educational Foundation, International Development Resource Organization, Inc., African Heritage Association of Southwest Georgia, the Albany Second Chance Reentry Program, and the Igbo Union of Southwest Georgia. He is also a key founder/CEO of several cultural and economic development initiatives in Nigeria, including the Eri Council of Art, Music and Culture and the Omambala Area Economic Development Foundation.

He is widely published, has presented numerous scholarly papers at regional, national, and international conferences, and currently serves as a Visiting Professor at Nnamdi Azikwe University in Awka, Nigeria. In addition, he has been actively engaged in public service for more than two decades, having been appointed by city and county commissions to serve on several community boards in Southwest Georgia, and has also served as a local newspaper columnist.

Through the Prof. Charles Ochie Educational Foundation, he is currently focused on expanding educational opportunities for underserved children in his hometown of Aguleri and surrounding communities. The foundation sponsors students at the elementary, secondary, and university levels, assisting with school fees and other educational needs. As part of this vision, Dr. Ochie has acquired twenty plots of land in Aguleri and is working to raise funds to establish the Aguleri Technical and Vocational Institute, which will include technical training programs as well as attached elementary and high school programs that will serve as feeder institutions. The goal of this initiative is to provide quality education and practical technical skills that will enhance employment opportunities for young people in Aguleri and neighboring communities. Dr. Ochie welcomes and deeply appreciates the support of donors who share this vision educational development.

Dr. Ochie is married to Mrs. Chinelo Ochie, and together they are blessed with four children and seven grandchildren.

Our Primary Target Goals

Our overarching goal is to create meaningful opportunities for underprivileged youth and women in the Omambala area to acquire practical, marketable technical skills that foster economic empowerment and long-term self-sufficiency. These skills include, but are not limited to, electrical installation, welding and fabrication, carpentry, plumbing, tailoring and fashion design, ICT and computer literacy, automotive repair, and agro-processing.

In many communities across the Omambala region, access to formal education remains limited, leaving a significant number of young people and underprivileged women without employable skills. As a result, many are left to roam the streets without viable means of livelihood, perpetuating cycles of poverty and economic dependency.

In response to this pressing need, the Ochie Foundation has acquired 20 plots of land in Aguleri and has developed plans for the establishment of the Aguleri Technical and Vocational Institute. This institute is envisioned as a transformative center that will provide access to quality technical and vocational education for the educationally underserved, equipping them with the skills necessary to secure employment or become self-reliant entrepreneurs.

We are currently seeking financial support and strategic partnerships to bring this vision to reality. Your assistance will play a critical role in constructing and equipping this institute, thereby opening pathways to opportunity, dignity, and sustainable livelihoods for the people of Omambala.
